Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding Pelvic Floor Assessments: Patient FAQ
It is common to feel a bit nervous before your first pelvic health appointment. To help you feel prepared and comfortable, here are the answers to the questions patients ask most often.
What actually happens during a Pelvic Floor Assessment?
The assessment is divided into two parts. First, Prachi will discuss your medical history, symptoms, and goals in a private room. The second part may involve a physical examination to check how your pelvic floor muscles are functioning. This is done with your consent and at a pace you are comfortable with.
Is the physical exam mandatory?
No. While a physical exam is the “gold standard” for accurately diagnosing muscle strength, coordination, or prolapse, it is entirely optional. If you are not comfortable with it, Prachi can still provide significant help through education, lifestyle advice, and external assessment techniques.
What should I wear?
You can wear your normal clothes. For the physical examination part of the consult, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and will be provided with a towel for coverage to ensure your privacy and dignity at all times.
Can I come in if I am on my period?
Yes, you can. Having your period does not interfere with the assessment or the physical exam. However, if you personally feel more comfortable waiting until your period has finished, we are happy to reschedule your appointment.
How long does the appointment take?
An initial Women’s Pelvic Health consultation usually takes 60 minutes. This ensures there is plenty of time to talk through your concerns, perform a thorough assessment, and create a treatment plan without feeling rushed.
Can I bring my baby to the appointment?
Absolutely. Many of our postnatal patients bring their babies along. We have a pram-friendly clinic and are more than happy for you to pause the session if you need to tend to your little one.
